ABOUT ME

Web_Session-10-01a

Jerry Ilao is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) by profession and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). His love for business started when he was a kid, selling old toys to his classmates. In college, he was an academic scholar and despite his financial constraints, he graduated Valedictorian and Magna Cum Laude of his class in 1999. He was also selected as Most Outstanding JPIAn of the Philippines and became a finalist in the Top 10 Most Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP).

After passing the CPA board exam, he worked in Procter & Gamble (P&G) for 7 years. It was during this time that he tried to engage in different businesses during his free-time. He started first with a boutique, then later on a mobile carwash company, then after that, a restaurant. But all of those businesses closed within a year of operation, flushing down the drain his 5 years’ worth of personal savings amounting to P1 million.

The Knockout

Still unfazed with his business failures and determined to succeed in business, he said to himself “Pasasan ba at tatamaan ko rin yan!” So in 2005, he tried his luck on his 4th venture, an ink refilling business he named Ink All-You-Can. It was during this time that he finally struck some luck on the business. Ink All-You-Can quickly grew from a home-based business to a full-fledged operation within just a year of because of the need of Filipinos to save on printing expenses.

The Leap of Faith

In 2007, after 2 years of doing the business part-time, he finally took a leap of faith and resigned from his corporate job to focus on his growing business. Ink All-You-Can was able to penetrate the key SM Supermalls such as SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, SM North Edsa, SM Fairview, etc., becoming a major player in the alternative printer ink industry.

In 2011, after realizing the big shift that is happening towards Mobile Phones, he set-up MobileOptima, Inc., together with his wife Rio, to focus on developing world-class mobile applications such as mobile tracking for field employees and automated time-keeping for stores.

The Leapreneur & AFFI

In the past years, a lot of his friends are asking him how he transitioned from employee to entrepreneur. He then realized that although there are a lot of seminars and resources on starting a business in general, there is no specific resources for employees who want to transition to entrepreneurship.

So last October 2015, he finished his book, The Leapreneur – How to Transition from Employee to Entrepreneur, to share his journey and business lessons. Leapreneur is a word he coined from “take the leap” and “entrepreneur” to describe employees who are taking the leap to entrepreneurship. One month after, he build the Leapreneur website to be the resource guide for employees.

He is also the current President of AFFI, the Association of Filipino Franchisers, Inc. Under his leadership, he influenced the direction of the organization to open to more entrepreneurs and he helped conceptualized new programs such as the EntrepRun, Open House, among others.
