“My job is not to be easy on people. My job is to take these great people we have and to push them and make them even better.” — Steve Jobs

A good mentor is someone who will help the entrepreneurs by sharing his experience and motivating them to take calculated risks and unlock their hidden potential. This is how Steve Jobs built Apple, by pushing great minds and making them even better.

There are some traits which you need to watch out for in a good mentor.

Passionate: They are passionate about their lives, their field and about your idea. If you can see the passion in their eyes, positive energy radiating out of their bodies and you feel inspired and highly motivated after you talk to them then you have found a good mentor!

“A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you, than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you.” Bob Proctor

Prudent: Good mentors will share their wisdom with you. Their way of giving advice would be so unique that you would feel their words touching your heart and your mind connecting to them. Your inner voice will tell you again and again that you have to do exactly as the mentor say. The respect between you and him will further deepen the mentor-mentee bond.

“Advice is like snow; the softer it falls, the longer it dwells upon, and the deeper it sinks into the mind.” Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Punctual: Good mentors will always be punctual. They honor the commitments and always show up on time. A good mentor will give you full attention in the time slot he has committed with you. He will expect you to show genuine interest during your meeting and ask questions. A good mentor will ignite your creativity.

“The mind is not a vessel that needs filling, but wood that needs igniting.” Plutarch

These were the top three qualities of a good mentor. Apart from that what you need to realize is that mentor-mentee relationship is a two way road and when you are looking for a good mentor then it is your duty to prove yourself as a good mentee and give your mentor the honor, trust and respect he deserves for the time and experience he is sharing with you.

When you meet a good mentor then this is what they expect from you

●     Preciseness – Be specific that what you want help with and how you think they can help

●     Preparedness – Do your homework and make sure you are approaching the right mentor

●     Passion – Show your enthusiasm! Nobody wants to waste their time, if you yourself aren’t passionate about your idea
